Interview

“My goal is to target the top five”

In 2021, Lorenzo Santolino achieved the goal that the toughest race in the world had denied him in his first two Dakar participations. After an arduous year due to the health crisis and the death of his mother due to illness, the Guijuelo native dedicated his first Dakar finish to his mother with a brilliant sixth-place result, which was the best showing from a Spaniard in the motorbike category. The Sherco rider achieved this in a very emotional edition for him in which he auctioned his race kit to benefit Pyfano, an association from Salamanca that works with children who are ill with cancer. In 2022, the Spaniard was always among the best with great consistency, but finally, technical problems forced him to make an engine change. The corresponding penalty demoted him to 11th place. Not only does Santolino want to return to the top ten for the 2023 Dakar, he also wants to improve on his 6th place in 2021 and battle to be in the top 5. After excelling in the Spanish Enduro Championship and at the international level, Santolino made the leap to rally-raid and made his Dakar debut in 2019. In his maiden appearance, his pure speed turned heads. But he took a tremendous fall on stage 6, fracturing six ribs and cracking two vertebrae. He tried again at the 2020 Dakar. After some mechanical problems, Lorenzo was making up ground in 16th place, riding at the pace of the top ten; when on stage 9, he dislocated his elbow and suffered a head injury due to compression while descending a steep dune. He finally demonstrated his skills on the 2021 Dakar, establishing himself as one of the best riders in the world, finishing 6th in the general classification, which he wants to improve on in 2023.

L.S.: “Setting a goal of a result is more like dreaming than being realistic because there are so many things we cannot control. But obviously, you have to have a target, and after finishing 6th in 2021, I want to finish in the top five. It's so challenging because even if everything goes well. The competition level continues to improve. There are a lot of fast riders and others who have a lot of experience.
“One of the new things in the team this year is that we have participated in the new FIM W2RC World Rally-Raid Championship. Sherco committed to doing the full schedule this year, and in 2023 it is expected that we will also do the entire championship. We have tried to improve this year, especially confidence and safety in terms of feeling with the suspension. In the Morocco Rally, we took a step backwards, but in the Rally Andalucía, we regained a positive feeling, and the team has kept working in the time that remains. We have some new things in the engine, things to improve reliability and to improve the performance a little bit. There are no big changes. It is the same base, but we have made small improvements”.
