After some difficult Dakars, for 2022 Mario Patrao figured a change of scene might provoke a change in luck and so entered the ‘no outside assistance’ Original by Motul class. As a skilled mechanic and ex-KTM factory team water carrier (2017-2020), he was eminently suited to the category, as his results subsequently proved. 42nd overall in Jeddah and 6th in the Motul category, the Portuguese star also won the W2RC Veteran class. Absent from the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, Mario was back in W2RC on the Rally du Maroc and again on the Andalucia Rally, both times winning the Veteran’s class and going on to win the coveted FIM Veteran’s Trophy ahead of Dakar legend Franco Picco.

Charan Moore set the fastest time in yesterday's special in the Original by Motul category, over 6′30″ ahead of Javi Vega, and moved within 2′36″ of the Spanish overall leader. The fight for the title in Dammam should come down to these two bikers, as the third-placed rider, Mário Patrão, is more than an hour back.
