Interview

China’s record-breaker in the bikes

Zaker Yakp returns to the Dakar in 2023 looking to make it a perfect four out of four finishes in the bikes. The Chinese rider has been mad about motorcycles since childhood; as a boy, he discovered a battered old bike in the family garage and decided to take it for a spin around the desert tracks near his house. Growing up in the Xinjiang region -a perfect place for honing offroad skills- the 34-year-old developed into one of China's most talented riders, claiming a podium finish at the iconic Taklimakan Rally at just 22 years of age. He worked his way up to a first Dakar participation in 2020, finishing as the sixth-best rookie in 42nd place. The following year he made history by coming 33rd and claiming his country’s best-ever finish in the bikes! Zaker didn't manage to improve on that performance at Dakar 2022, but still completed the rally for the third consecutive year, in 41st position. His efforts have clearly helped to boost the Dakar’s profile back home; no fewer than six Chinese bikers will be taking part in this 45th edition, with newcomers Kove Rally fielding three of them. As ever, Zaker will be lining up alongside his Wupu Dahaidao teammates Zhao Hongyi and Zhang Min, with ‘ZZZ’ looking to share another memorable Dakar adventure and make it to the finish line in Dammam.
