Mount Vernon - Lois Haley, 95, a longtime resident of Mt. Vernon, WA died on Wednesday, October 12, 2022. Born Feb 21, 1927, in Champlain NY to Rev. T. Earl and Pearl (Grover) Poindexter, she was the second of five children. The family moved frequently during her school years and Lois graduated from high school in Spokane, WA, after which she re-joined her family in Des Moines, WA and attended the University of Puget Sound. While in Des Moines, she met Elvin Haley and they were married on March 17, 1950. The couple initially settled in Sumas, WA and then moved to Mt. Vernon, WA, where they raised three daughters and Elvin became the band program director for the city. A Methodist pastor's daughter and a gifted musician, Lois quickly became active at Mt. Vernon First United Methodist Church (MVFUMC) serving as lay leader, choir member, accompanist for the children's choir, singing with women's ensembles, playing piano and organ, serving in different offices in United Methodist Women and teaching Sunday School. In 1978, Lois discovered a new interest-handbells! She became a passionate supporter of the art, spearheading a campaign to bring handbells to MVFUMC. Beginning with a 3-octave bell set, throughout her 30 + years of involvement the program expanded to include five octaves of bells as well as tone chimes. Together with her husband, Lois hiked in the Pacific Northwest, traveled around the country, sailed the San Juan Islands and rode motorcycles. They were active supporters of Habitat for Humanity building homes throughout the state. They served with the local food banks and did volunteer work for the Park Department in the San Juan Islands. She is survived by daughters: Carolann Haley (Reston, VA), Donn Heflin and her husband Bob, Deb Haley (Mt Vernon, WA) and granddaughter Reilly Villanueva (San Francisco, CA); sister Carolyn Johnson (Mt Vernon, WA) and brother Delos and wife Kathy (Arlington, WA). She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and two brothers, Grover and Orin Poindexter. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 22 at 1:00 P.M. at Mt. Vernon First United Methodist Church. Memorial gifts in memory of Lois may be made to Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church Handbell Fund or Habitat for Humanity. (Checks may be made payable to: MVFUMC with "Handbell Fund" or "Habitat for Humanity" on the memo line.)
