Sustainability is a key theme this year at the annual CES tech trade show in Las Vegas. Agriculture tech is on full display on the show floor while companies big and small also showcase their green innovations and initiatives. That includes Volvo CEO Martin Lundstedt's vow to reach net-zero emissions by 2040 and Wisconsin-based OshKosh Corporation's electric fire engines and garbage trucks. John Deere also unveiled a fleet of fully autonomous equipment like tractors that are already in use on some farms and orchards. Some experts say AI is key to the industry's future as climate change makes farming more unpredictable.

Indonesia’s new government has begun an ambitious project to fight malnutrition by feeding nearly 90 million children and pregnant women that is expected to cost $28 billion through 2029, although critics question whether the program is affordable. The Free Nutritious Meal program delivers on a campaign promise by President Prabowo Subianto, who was elected last year. He says the program aims to fight the stunting of growth that afflicts 21% of Indonesian children younger than 5 and would raise the income of farmers. At his inauguration last year, Subianto promised to provide free school lunches and milk as part of a longer-term strategy to develop the nation’s human resources to achieve a “Golden Indonesia” generation by 2045.

Sierra Leone's brutal civil war from 1991-2002 created about 28,000 amputees. Now many live on the streets and beg, facing discrimination. They are often regarded as a shameful reminder of the war. One initiative is tackling this by training amputees to farm and strengthen their independence. Despite its success with 100 trainees so far, the project remains a rare example. The country's Truth and Reconciliation Commission says there is currently no specific support for amputees from the government.
