“Difficult to get back to the top”
If it wasn't for an unfortunate pavement and, more critically, a lack of clarity on a beautiful January morning during the liaison, who knows how the Dakar could have ended for Daniel Sanders? Perhaps on the top step of the podium in Jeddah? That morning, the day after the rest day, the Australian rider was in third place in the general classification after he had won two of the first six stages. His second Dakar ended in hospital with a fractured elbow and left wrist. What followed was an almost non-existent season due to complications with his elbow. Sanders only competed in and won the Hattah Desert race in Australia and comes to the Dakar in doubt, while his principal rivals are coming off a complete W2RC season. The Melbourne native is, nevertheless, the embodiment of the new generation of riders. It's easy to make a comparison between Toby Price and Daniel Sanders. Both are Australian, both are fast, and both have long hair. And they were teammates at KTM Red Bull at the start of the 2021 Dakar. And the comparison doesn't stop there, considering Sanders' result at the end of his first Dakar. Price finished on the podium, but Sanders wasn't far off. Without no previous rally-raid experience, Sanders finished an impressive 4th in Jeddah. He now has to do at least as well as his illustrious elder.
“My year was a bit of a disaster. I got a great start to the Dakar with two stage wins and was in third place on the rest day. On day seven, I crashed on the road and destroyed my left elbow, which unfortunately put me out of the race. I went home and had a second operation. I missed Abu Dhabi. I started training for a desert event in Australia and won the Hattah Desert Race. That was really cool. Then I went to America to test, and when I returned home, I had a check-up X-ray and discovered that I had torn my elbow again, unfortunately. I needed another operation, and plates were used to hold it in place. I had another operation, and everything is fine now. I will be ready for the race. The goal for the next five years is to win five Dakars, which would obviously be the best scenario. But it will be a tall order to do that. I haven't ridden for nine months. It will be a struggle for me to get back to where I was. I am ready for the challenge and desperately want to finish the Dakar. I don't need the speed I had this year to be competitive. I need to play it a little smarter. I didn't have any luck this year, so I think I will be able to come back strong and get a good result. For the next few years, I want to finish every Dakar and get on the podium as often as possible. I'm super excited about fighting. It is what I live for every year: to compete and reach the finish. I am determined to give it my all this year. I definitely have a good chance to challenge for victory.”

Daniel Sanders: “My arm is not too good”
Daniel Sanders was the 2nd rider to start this morning and also kept the same position at the finishing line, a fine performance, just like that of Toby Price who set off just after him to finish third. However, it is not sufficient to get himself back into the reckoning: “Chucky” is 7th in the general rankings, 20 minutes from the summit.
...Sanders doing it for the honour
Daniel Sanders, the 2nd rider to start the special, has caught up with Luciano Benavides and is opening the special. Despite the bonuses he will acquire today, his pursuers are likely to achieve better times and his 7th place in the general rankings, more than 20 minutes from the summit of the rally seems to have compromised his hopes of returning to the top before Dammam....
Sanders now opens the way
Caught by Daniel Sanders, Luciano Benavides is no longer opening alone and is currently accompanied by his Australian rival. They have both just completed 87 km and Benavides already trails by 3 minutes.
Daniel Sanders: “It was just good fun out there”
“Chucky”, who was 2nd on the special, 1’38’’ behind Luciano Benavides, has climbed to 7th in the general rankings, 21’40’’ behind the leader.
“It wasn’t too bad. I started off a little slowly, just getting used to riding in the dunes again. Then Luciano did a little mistake and...
Sanders plays it strategically
Daniel Sanders led this 45th edition of the Dakar at one point and is in ninth place at the beginning of stage 11, approximately 24 minutes behind Kevin Benavides. With an 11th-placed finish yesterday, the Australian admitted it was a plan to not be among the top 10. “I didn’t want to finish in the top 10 today because the marathon stage starts tomorrow,...
Daniel Sanders: "I hope to come out swinging in stage 9"
Third today at 3'15", Sanders has found his pre-illness rhythm again and is now seventh overall, less than nine minutes behind the leader.
"We had sort of a rest day yesterday. We got to switch off the brain and try to eat a little bit, get the energy levels back up. I'm still fighting this stomach bud a little bit. Hopefully I'm on the mend now,...
Daniel Sanders: “Hopefully, I can get over this in the next couple of days”
Under the weather for the last two days, Daniel Sanders courageously reached the finishing line of stage six in seventh position. Although he has conceded six more minutes to rally leader Skyler Howes, the Australian remains in the top eight of the general rankings, so all is not lost.
“I’m so sick. It was just a tough...
Sanders is back on form
Daniel Sanders has reached the refuelling point after 207 km with the 5th best time. The Australian is within a second of Joan Barreda and 2'17'' behind the best time set by Skyler Howes. He seems to have but his off day yesterday well behind him.
